Chanting has been used in many cultures and in many spiritual paths since humans could first vocalize.
Chanting is much more than merely singing or praying. It is a mental and physical discipline that combines breath control and concentration and can induce a trance state.
One of the most well known chants is "Hare Krishna".
The "Divine Office"--series of prayers chanted by Catholic priests. They have been obligatory for all priests since 1918.
Wiccans use chants to center, induce trance states and to accumulate and transfer energy. And sometimes we just chant because it sounds so beautiful!
