Pentagrams
The term "pentagram" is the mathematical definition for a written or drawn 5 pointed star, usually surrounded by a circle.A "pentacle" is a material representation of a pentagram.
The pentagram has been a mystical symbol for many different spiritual paths and has been used since ancient times.
In ancient Greece it was the symbol of Kore, the Goddess of fruits and vegetables. In Egypt the five-pointed star represented the womb of Mother Earth. To the Celts, it was the symbol of Morgan, Goddess of the underworld. In Babylon pentagram protection amulets have been unearthed. In old Europe it was used as a representation of the Horned God.
The pentagram was also used by Judeo-Christians. It was considered the first of the Seven Seals, and also believed to represent the 5 wounds of Christ. Sir Gawain is said to have had a pentagram on his shield.
Today the pentagram is the most widely recognized symbol of Wicca. Wiccans use the pentagram as a focusing and meditation tool. The 5 points are said to represent:
the 5 directions -East, South, West, North and Center,
the 5 senses
the limbs and head of the body,
or certain qualities and principals upon which one meditates
On a Wiccan altar you will find a pentacle--a plate or disk, inscribed with a pentagram-- which is used in ritual.
The inverted pentagram is used in some Wiccan traditions as a symbol of advanced degree
